That is why many national and international top players choose Brabo Hockey.
History
A Dutch hockey brand born from a passion for the game, grown into a globally recognized name, trusted by Olympic champions and young players just beginning their journey. This is where it all began.
Where it al began
Brabo was founded on expertise, necessity, and entrepreneurship. In 1968, Jan van den Brandt began developing goalkeeper protection in Boxtel, inspired by his own experience as a hockey goalkeeper. At a time when high-quality protective equipment was barely available, he saw not only a challenge but also an opportunity to make the game safer and better.
Working from his sports store in Boxtel, he gradually built a brand with a distinctive identity. The name Brabo directly reflects its origins: BRA from Van den Brandt and BO from Boxtel. What started with shin guards and goalkeeper protection laid the foundation for Brabo Goalie and later evolved into Brabo, an internationally recognized hockey brand.
Today, Brabo still stands for the same mindset on which it was founded: products developed from real-world experience, with a focus on performance, protection, and the continuous improvement of the game of hockey.
1968
Brabo Hockey was founded on pure hockey experience, entrepreneurship, and the drive to move the game forward. On May 1, 1968, Jan van den Brandt founded the brand in Boxtel. As a hockey goalkeeper, he understood better than anyone the importance of high-quality protection. At a time when goalkeeper equipment was still barely developed, he played with minimal protection and took heavy blows week after week.
Rather than accepting this as the norm, Jan saw an opportunity. From his sports store, he began developing stronger, more durable, and more reliable goalkeeper protection. His early experiments with bamboo as a reinforcing material were highly innovative for their time and marked the beginning of a brand that has always remained closely connected to the sport.
What started as a solution for one goalkeeper grew into the foundation of Brabo Hockey: an international brand built on innovation, performance, and protection. Developed from real experience on the field, made for players who want to get the very best out of their game.
1975
Around 1975, Brabo Hockey broadened its horizons. After its initial success in goalkeeper protection, the brand took an important step toward the wider game: the introduction of field hockey sticks. The first models were made entirely of wood, as was standard at the time, but Brabo continued to pursue improvement even in this area.
By later adding fiberglass to selected sticks, new possibilities emerged in terms of balance, feel, and striking power. Players gained more choice, greater control, and equipment that better matched their style of play. In doing so, Brabo demonstrated what the brand had stood for from the very beginning: developing field hockey products based on real-world experience, with a focus on innovation and performance.
This step marked a key turning point in the history of Brabo Hockey. From a specialist in goalkeeper protection, the brand evolved into a broader hockey brand with ambition. Rooted in Boxtel, but always looking ahead: toward better equipment, improved performance, and an increasingly significant role within the world of field hockey.
1988
In 1988, Brabo Hockey once again took a major step in the development of goalkeeper protection. With the introduction of foam legguards, the brand launched an innovation that responded to the growing demand for greater comfort, improved shock absorption, and optimal freedom of movement.
Where traditional materials were often hard, heavy, and limited in flexibility, the new foam legguards offered a modern solution for the goalkeeper of that era. They combined protection with wearing comfort and gave goalkeepers more confidence to perform at the highest level.
The launch gained immediate international visibility during the 1988 Olympic Games, where Roland Jansen wore Brabo foam legguards. This meant the innovation was not only introduced, but also proven on the biggest stage in field hockey.
This milestone underlined what Brabo Hockey stands for: thinking ahead, innovating, and developing products that help goalkeepers get the very best out of their game.
1990
In the early 1990s, Brabo took an important step toward the modern game of field hockey. The brand made the transition from traditional wooden sticks to new constructions using fiberglass and carbon—materials that would permanently transform the sport.
This innovative material choice made sticks lighter, stronger, and more powerful. Players gained more speed, greater striking power, and improved control, allowing equipment to better match the increasing intensity of modern field hockey. In doing so, Brabo actively responded to the technological development of the sport and the evolving demands of ambitious players.
With this step, Brabo further developed into a modern hockey manufacturer with a clear focus on performance and innovation. A brand that not only moved with the international hockey world, but also increasingly established its own position within the evolution of the game.
1998
In 1998, Brabo once again took an important step in its history with the introduction of the brand’s first fully synthetic field hockey stick. This development marked a new chapter in the evolution of hockey equipment and underlined Brabo’s ambition to remain at the forefront of innovation.
By moving away from wood entirely, a stick was created that better matched the demands of the modern game. The synthetic construction offered greater durability, more consistent ball control, and improved on-field performance. As a result, players could rely on more dependable equipment suited to the increasingly fast and intense nature of field hockey.
With this introduction, Brabo strengthened its position as a forward-thinking hockey brand. The first fully synthetic stick represented an important milestone and demonstrated that the brand continuously invests in innovation to support players at every level.
2006
The acquisition by Kubus Sports in 2006 marked an important new phase in the history of Brabo Hockey. Where the brand originated in Boxtel, becoming part of Kubus Sports gave Brabo the space and momentum to further professionalize and expand internationally.
As part of Kubus Sports, Brabo was strengthened in product development, distribution, and brand positioning. This increased level of professionalism elevated Brabo to a higher standard and accelerated its growth beyond the Dutch market.
Under Kubus Sports, Brabo evolved from a regional hockey brand with authentic roots into an internationally recognized A-brand within the sport. Today, players at the highest level around the world trust Brabo equipment—a confirmation of what the brand stands for: performance, innovation, and the ambition to make every player better.
vanaf 2006
From 2006 onward, Brabo accelerated its international growth under the umbrella of Kubus Sports. The brand evolved from a strong European player into a global field hockey brand with a clearly defined position in the international market.
With expansion into key hockey nations such as the United Kingdom, Australia, South Africa, Argentina, the United States, Canada, and Malaysia, Brabo built a strong international network. In these markets, the brand became increasingly recognized for its focus on performance, design, and player experience.
This global expansion confirmed Brabo’s position as a permanent fixture within the international hockey community: a brand with Dutch roots, global ambition, and products that support players around the world in their game.
2006-2010
Between 2006 and 2010, Brabo made a striking move within the hockey world with the introduction of stylish shoulder bags for women. Where sports bags had traditionally been purely functional, Brabo brought a collection that combined performance and lifestyle in a new way.
With bold designs, flag prints, and vibrant color combinations, Brabo clearly distinguished itself from the competition. The shoulder bag became more than just a practical way to carry hockey gear—it turned into a recognizable fashion item on and around the pitch.
This collection underlined Brabo’s innovative spirit. The brand showed that field hockey is not only about equipment and performance, but also about style, identity, and experience, reinforcing its role as a trendsetter within hockey fashion.
2008-2010
Between 2008 and 2010, Brabo once again made an impact in the hockey market with the introduction of an innovative line of colorful junior sticks. At a time when youth sticks were often still simple and traditionally designed, Brabo brought a fresh collection featuring bold colors, creative prints, and fashionable designs.
This made the stick more than just a piece of sports equipment for young players. Brabo combined product innovation with experience-driven activation campaigns such as “Design Your Own Stick” and various prize promotions, actively involving children in the brand and turning their stick into part of their personal style and identity.
Through this combination of design, creativity, and brand experience, Brabo clearly distinguished itself within the junior hockey segment. The brand once again confirmed its role as a trendsetter: progressive in product development, strong in visual identity, and closely connected to the next generation of hockey players.
2012
In 2012, Brabo Hockey took a major step in the development of high-performance field hockey sticks with the introduction of the TeXtreme® series. As the first hockey brand in the world to apply this technology, Brabo brought a clear innovation to the highest segment of the market.
In collaboration with TeXtreme®, advanced spread tow carbon was integrated into a new generation of sticks. This technology, also used in top-level industries such as Formula 1, delivered a strong combination of reduced weight, increased stiffness, and improved durability. The result was sticks that offered players more speed, power, and control without sacrificing feel.
Within the TeXtreme® series, Brabo introduced several models, including the F1, F2, and F3, each designed for a specific playing style and level of ambition. With this launch, Brabo reinforced its position as an innovative hockey brand that brings together technology, performance, and design for players who want to get the very best out of their game.
2019
Introduced in the Brabo Elite series, the Wave Torsion Box marked a milestone in stick development. The technology incorporated a diagonal wave structure into the shaft, making the stick stiffer both longitudinally and in torsion.
The key innovation lies in what happens on off-center hits. The wave construction helps correct balance and converts asymmetric forces into direct ball speed, resulting in less energy loss and more efficiency.
The WTB was applied in combination with Forged Carbon, a material that makes complex shapes such as the wave structure truly possible. Together, they produced a stick that feels powerful and responsive.
This technology laid the foundation for what Brabo would later evolve into the Hyper Torsion Box in the current Elite series.
2026
Innovation has been at the heart of Brabo Hockey for many years. With the new Quicklock system, Brabo becomes the first hockey brand to introduce an innovative closure system for hockey shoes.
Thanks to Quicklock, you can tighten your shoes in one simple motion and lock them instantly. This ensures an optimal fit, extra comfort, and maximum stability during training sessions and matches. In addition, loose laces are a thing of the past, allowing you to fully focus on your game.
The Quicklock system is designed for hockey players who want to get the best out of themselves and stands for speed, convenience, and reliability. With this innovation, Brabo once again takes a step forward in the development of high-quality hockey products.
